Maeng Da, Bali, Borneo, Sumatra: what kratom strain names mean
Updated · Prozyum
Kratom "strain" names are trade names, not botanical varieties: all kratom is the single species Mitragyna speciosa. Most names point to a region of origin (Borneo, Sumatra, Malay, Hulu), a trading hub (Bali) or a selected grade (Maeng Da).
Maeng Da
Maeng Da is a trade name taken from Thai slang, used for a selected, higher grade of leaf rather than for a place. Today it is sold in every vein colour and sourced mostly from Indonesia. Because the name is a grade claim, it is only as good as the supplier behind it.
Bali
Despite the name, very little kratom is grown on Bali itself. The name dates from when Bali was a shipping point for leaf grown elsewhere in Indonesia, and it has stuck as a style of large-leaf, often darker powder. Most Bali kratom today comes from Kalimantan or Sumatra.
Borneo
Borneo refers to leaf from the island of Borneo, in practice mostly from Kalimantan, the Indonesian part. Kalimantan is the largest kratom-growing area supplying Europe.
Sumatra
Leaf grown on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Sumatra is often sold in white and yellow vein.
Malay
Named after Malaysia, where kratom grows natively. Because of Malaysian export rules, most "Malay" on the market is a style name for leaf grown in Indonesia.
Hulu
Hulu refers to the Kapuas Hulu area of West Kalimantan, along the upper Kapuas river. Hulu is usually sold as red vein.
What to look at instead of the name
Since names are marketing as much as geography, compare batches on what can be checked: stated origin, mill fineness and a lab report per batch. Every Prozyum strain lists its origin on the product page and is tested before it is packed.
