How to store kratom powder so a kilo keeps

Updated · Prozyum

Store kratom powder airtight, in the dark, cool and dry. Keep the sealed kilo bag closed and decant a smaller working portion into an opaque, airtight container, so the bulk of the powder is exposed to air, light and humidity as little as possible.

What spoils kratom powder

Four things: humidity, heat, light and air. Moisture is the most serious, because damp powder clumps and can grow mould. Heat and light slowly degrade the leaf and fade its colour, and repeated exposure to air lets moisture in every time the bag is opened.

Keep the kilo sealed

A heat-sealed bag is the best container the powder will ever have. Rather than opening the kilo bag again and again, open it once and move a portion of a few weeks into a smaller container. Close the rest tightly with as little air inside as possible.

Which container

Airtight and opaque: a glass jar in a dark cupboard, a metal tin, or a thick resealable pouch. Avoid clear containers on a sunny shelf and anything that sits near a stove, kettle or dishwasher, where heat and steam come and go.

Fridge or freezer?

Not for a bag you open often: taking cold powder into a warm room makes condensation form inside, which is exactly the moisture you are trying to avoid. For long-term reserve stock, cold storage only makes sense for portions that are sealed airtight and left closed until they are used up.

Signs a batch has gone off

A musty smell, visible mould, hard clumps that do not break up, or a colour that has faded to brown-grey. Powder in that state should be thrown away. Stored airtight in a cool, dark place, a sealed kilo of well-dried powder stays in good condition for a long time.
